Relay Instructions

Rules and Instructions

Leg #1 = 7.0 miles

Leg #2 = 11.7 miles

Leg #3 = 7.5 miles

Only registered runners may run, and no substitutions are permitted after September 15,2008. Each relay team member must wear his/her race number in front and the relay team tag on his/her back. Both must be clearly visible and displayed in their entirety – no folding.

Read this carefully! Like the marathon, the relay will be timed using the ChampionChip®. Each team will be provided with one (and only one) chip attached to an ankle band. You must attach the chip to your ankle and transfer chip and band at the end of each leg of the relay. The easiest way to do this is to have the runner beginning the relay leg bend down and remove the chip from the runner completing the leg and then attach it to his/her own ankle before s/he start to run. This sounds like a lot of trouble - but it is a lot better than carrying that blasted baton for 5 or 6 miles! You will not receive a time for your team unless you wear the chip - on every leg of the race - no exceptions!! There will be a $30 fee billed for lost chips - we rent them and have to pay the owner for lost chips.

Relay runners will be directed into separate coned lanes at each of the transfer zones. While waiting for your relay team member in the transfer zone, please do not interfere with other runners. After the chip transfer, you may continue to run the course on your own. However, only one relay member may cross the finish line.

Any violation of the above rules can result in disqualification of the entire relay team.

Transportation

Relay team members must use the bus transportation. Private vehicles are prohibited on the course.

Bus transportation will be provided from the start area to each of the two transfer points, and from these points to the finish area. Buses will be located at the start area prior to the race; at least one for each destination point. Read the signs and get on the correct bus. A race official will be located next to each bus. The race official will assist you if you have any questions.

The bus to the first Relay Transfer Point must depart ten minutes prior to the start of the race - every year a few people miss this bus - don't let it be you. All other buses will depart five minutes after the runners have reached the horizon. Each bus will wait at the transfer point to pick up runners finishing the previous leg of the race. Buses will depart from the transfer points to the finish area when full (faster runners) or at the time all Relay Teams have passed that particular Relay Point. Please be patient for slower runners.

This schedule should allow teams averaging 10 minutes per mile to reach the buses. Those few runners not able to meet this schedule may ride in one of the aid vehicles patrolling the course.

Warm-ups

Upon opening your race packet, you'll discover two numbered bags. These are for your two sets of warm-ups; one to wear before your leg of the relay and the other to wear after your leg of the race. Before leaving the start area, deposit the bag with your post-race warm-ups on the bus headed to the transfer point at the end of your portion of the relay. You may leave the bag with your pre-race warm-ups on the bus that took you to your starting point.

Extra bags will be available on each bus. However, you are responsible for finding a marker with which to write your race number on the bag. All bags left on the front seat of the buses will magically appear with all the other bags at the warm-up pick-up area at the finish line.
