Watertown, Wi Resident Zdroik, Crystal Lake Ill. Giuliano Win 2012 Lakefront Marathon
Picture-perfect conditions for 3,200 runners in Milwaukee
(Milwaukee) October 8, 2012 –Paul Zdroik, a 24-year old from Watertown, Wisc,. won the 2012 Lakefront Marathon in a time of two hours, 27 minutes and eight seconds. He outpaced Zachary Meineke of Wauwatosa by more than two minutes. Meineke finished with a time of 2:29:37, good for second overall, followed by Ryan Guilano of Schamburg, Illinois, who finished at 2:29:59.
On the women’s side, the race became a love story as men’s third place winner Guilano’s fiancé, Jacqui, won the overall women’s race with a time of 2:55:06, outpacing Lisa Tortorice of Brookline, Massachusetts (2:59:02) and Denise Manthy of Wauwatosa (2:59:34). Ryan and Jacqui will be married next weekend in Illinois.
The 2012 race also featured the collegiate challenge of Paws versus Claws, pitting runners from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (Paws) versus runners from Concordia University in Mequon (Claws). This first year competition was a major success, with more than 120 finishers. Team PAWs was the overall winner with an average time of 4:12:06. Team Claws averaged 4:26:06.
UWM Chancellor Mike Lovell (3:19:01) co-sponsored the friendly challenge with Concordia University President Patrick Ferry (3:39:35). Both schools were thrilled with the turnout.
In total, more than 2,100 runners finished the 2012 race. Runners were greeted by 2012 US Olympian Nick Symmonds, and also had a chance to meet Joan Benoit Samuelson, the first woman to ever win an Olympic gold medal in the marathon distance in 1984 in Los Angeles, at an event on Wednesday, October 3.
