2011 Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon Winners Announced
Guinness Book World Record Achieved!!
MILWAUKEE, WI – Nick Szczech of Cudahy, WI was the men’s winner of Sunday’s 31st annual Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon, completing the race in 2:22:17. One of Marquette University’s cross country team stars, Szczech recently won the men’s division of the Briggs and Al’s Run in Milwaukee.
Amber Druien of Woodstock, IL was the women’s winner of the marathon completing the race in 2:54:15. Druien was an NCAA Division III national track champion at Illinois' North Central College
An exciting Guinness World Record was also achieved during this year’s race when 62 runners representing a wide-range of athletic abilities, experience and ages joined together (both literally and figuratively) to run the marathon, completing it in 6 hours 20 minutes. The “Jennipede” as they called themselves were tethered together by a long rope and karabiners that were attached to race belts. The team was captained by Runner’s World’s “Mayor of Running” Bart Yasso and included Wisconsin’s ultra-running legend Roy Pirrung. The team also raised over $108,000 for the rehabilitation care for Jenny Crain, a world-class runner who was severely injured on August 21, 2007 when hit by a car while training for the trials prior to the Beijing Olympics. Crain was in her wheel chair alongside the group for the last .2 mile and was at the finish line to receive a check for the money raised. Read more...

Scott Jansky and Nacole Fredrickson won the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon!
MILWAUKEE (Oct. 3, 2010) – Scott Jansky of Two Rivers had a time of 2:31:41 and Nacole Fredrickson of Milwaukee had a time of 3:01:39. Special guest Ann Marie Letko, a two-time Olympian, joined many other marathon runners in raising money for Jenny Crain's 'Make It Happen Fund'. The Foy brothers, Pat, Mike and Pete, especially helped with a large donation for Jenny's fund. Cheryl Neumann of the "Make It Happen" relay team pushed Jenny Crain so she could cross the finish line at 3:27:27.
Jim Bahr, Duane Tate Jr, and Bill Boehm are the three marathon runners who have completed all 30 Milwaukee Lakefront Marathons. They were each presented with a beautiful clock at the awards ceremony in honor of running all 30 marathons.
Marathon a family affair for three brothers running in support of Jenny Crain
MILWAUKEE (July 23, 2010) – Every runner has a reason for participating in a marathon. Trekking those 26.2 miles could be the fulfillment of a fitness goal, a personal record-breaking exercise, or in Pat, Pete and Mike Foy’s case, in support of someone.
The Foys will be running in honor of Milwaukeean Jenny Crain whose outstanding running career came to an end in 2007 when she was struck by a vehicle and suffered a traumatic brain injury.
“The opportunity to able to support Jenny in a small way makes this very special for us,” said Pat Foy.
“We decided to participate in the marathon this year not only because it’s the 30th anniversary and the three of us have not been able to complete a marathon together in quite a while, but also because Anne Marie [Letko] was coming to support Jenny and we wanted to get involved too.”
Letko is a former United States Olympic marathoner who participated in both the 1996 and 2000 games.
While the Foys do not know Jenny Crain personally, they were very aware of her story and wanted to help her cause – The Make It Happen Fund – any way they could.
“Running for awhile, you’re just sensitive to other runners’ stories,” he said.
Foy and his brothers are all seasoned runners who have participated in a number of marathons, including Milwaukee’s Lakefront and Chicago Marathons, dreaming of one day running the Boston Marathon.
At this year’s Lakefront Marathon, Foy and his brothers are aiming to achieve a 3:45 Boston Qualifying (BQ) time.
For some extra motivation to meet their BQ goal, for each brother who makes the 3:45 time, they will donate an additional $500 to their already generous contribution to the Make It Happen Fund.
“The BQ goal will be difficult for us to achieve, but puts a lot of fun into the experience,” Foy said. “If we do make our goal, it’ll be cause for celebration.”
In addition to Pat, Pete and Mike, three more of the Foys 11 siblings will be participating in the marathon. Two of Pat’s brothers who have never run more than a mile and a sister-in-law will compete on a relay team in the event. “This will work as a great incentive for all of us to get healthier and be together,” Foy said.
The Foys are also receiving some extra pre-marathon support from Letko, who has not only been providing training tips but has also invited them to a training run with her when she visits Milwaukee in August
“This is exactly the kind of thing that makes our marathon special,” said Kris Hinrichs, race director of the Lakefront Marathon. “A family like the Foy's and a special athlete like Anne Marie coming forward to help another runner like Jenny.”

Milwaukee's Lakefront Marathon hits capacity at record pace
MILWAUKEE (May 27, 2009) – The Lakefront Marathon continues to be the hot ticket in Milwaukee.
For the fifth consecutive year, the race has reached capacity on May 21, over five months before the October event. Each year, the race has progressively filled faster, but the pace in 2009 filled faster than ever, a full three weeks faster than the 2008. The record turnout is a trend seen across the running community of racing being recession proof.
Race officials believe a number of items contribute to the event’s continued popularity. “Certainly marathons, half marathons and other races are very popular today, even as the economy recovers,” said Kris Hinrichs, race director. “But Milwaukee is a special place to run and people come back every year for our fast course and great volunteers that make this event what it is today.”
Hinrichs notes that although the number participants did expand in 2008, the race leaders do not have any intentions of making the field much larger. “Unlike the big city marathons, people come to Milwaukee for the intimate experience they get from the community. That makes us different than other races.”
The 2009 Lakefront Marathon will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 4 at Grafton High School, and will wind along Milwaukee's North Shore area for 26.2 miles, finishing at Veteran's Park in Milwaukee.
The race's expo will take place on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3 at the MSOE Kern Center in downtown Milwaukee. Over 50 vendors and running experts will be available to share tips and equipment with runners of all levels. The Lakefront Marathon is the premiere event of the Badgerland Striders racing club, and annually fills hotels, restaurants and the streets of Milwaukee's North Shore each October.
The Lakefront Marathon annually contributes over $3 million to the greater Milwaukee economy each fall. The event will celebrate its 30th anniversary on October 3, 2010, when it will also be the Road Runners Club of America national championship race.

Formal Partnership with The American Cancer Society
MILWAUKEE (April 7, 2009) – Milwaukee’s Lakefront Marathon announces a formal partnership with The American Cancer Society(ACS) which designates the race as an official event in its Charity Runner program.
As part of the agreement, The American Cancer Society will help recruit and provide volunteers throughout the race course, and will also host an official pasta dinner prior to the race on October 4, 2009. The pasta dinner will be free to any ACS Charity Runners, but also available to all marathon and relay participants for fee. Location and pricing of the dinner is still being determined.
Race director Kris Hinrichs believes this partnership will benefit both runners and the greater Milwaukee community. "The American Cancer Society is a wonderful organization that helps people around the country impacted by cancer," said Hinrichs. "We are excited to be a formal partner in their Charity Runner program, and are especially excited to bring an official pasta dinner that promotes health and nutrition to the race weekend."
Roy Pirung, a world-class marathoner and ACS volunteer also shares in the excitement on the parnternship. "Running for someone other than yourself can add another dimension to being a complete person," said Pirung. ",I have run many races that are associated with a great cause and have gotten more satisfaction because of it. I am happy that the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon has partnered with the American Cancer Society to give you the opportunity to experience that same feeling."
ACS will have an exhibit booth at the 2009 Race Expo at the MSOE Kern Center, and will provide additional exposure opportunities to help raise dollars and awareness for the ongoing battle against cancer.
About The American Cancer Society Charity Runner Program
